M. Sc. Optics and Photonics-Germany

M. Sc. Optics and Photonics

KSOP Masters Education. We believe that a Ph.D. graduate school is unlikely to be successful without the background / infrastructure and the “funneling / filtering” through a corresponding associated, interdisciplinary coordinated masters program, aiming at attracting excellent students from abroad.

36 students per year can be admitted to our masters program. The best students of the masters program are supported by the KSOP Scholarship Program. Access to the KSOP masters education is granted via an application procedure.

A study plan is developed for each individual masters student (corresponding to his/her educational background) when entering the KSOP.

The M.Sc. course is divided into four stages providing the students with the necessary prerequisites (Stage I: Introduction) , to give them a solid background on the most important topics within the wide and diverse field of Optics and Photonics (Stage II: Core Subjects) and let them acquire specialized knowledge (Stage III: Specialization) to be able to competently perform a six-month research project on a current topic of research (masters thesis). In addition, an 8-weeks industrial internship is scheduled between stages 2 and 3.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship

The gross amount of the Verrès Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro per year (30.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission, within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the online form (see the "Selection outcomes" section below).
Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy; for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the following months.
Requirements to maintain the scholarship
Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Verrès Campus scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.
Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.

How to apply

To apply, students must, under the penalty of being excluded from the selection process:

We emphasise that the data shown in the documents must coincide with those inserted in the online application form. Moreover, failure to attach even one of the above documents will result in exclusion from the selection process.

Selection outcomes
Following the closure of the online application form, a special commission will meet to assess the applications.

At the end of the selection process, a provisional list of standings will be composed with the names of the students who have been awarded a scholarship and the names of the eligible applicants that may be awarded a scholarship in the event of one or more renunciations.

The list of standings will be affixed to the Official Register of the Politecnico di Torino. At the beginning of May 2009, information about where and how to access the selection outcomes will be published on this project website and on the Apply@Polito section of the Politecnico website.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AFFIXING OF THE LIST OF STANDINGS TO THE OFFICIAL REGISTER OF THE POLITECNICO DI TORINO WILL BE, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, THE ONLY OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION OF INCLUSION IN THE LIST OF SELECTIONS AND, FOR STUDENTS WITH THE APPROPRIATE QUALIFICATIONS, THE ONLY OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION THAT THEY HAVE BEEN AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP.

An e-mail message will be sent to all scholarship recipients and eligible applicants summarising the terms for the disbursement of the scholarship. This message will be sent to the address(es) specified by the students themselves on the online application form. NEVERTHELESS, THIS MESSAGE DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION OF THE OUTCOME OF THE SELECTION.

The scholarship awardees and eligible applicants who wish to confirm their position must take the following steps:

download the scholarship acceptance form which will be published together with the list of selection outcomes, fill it in and fax it to the number +39 011 090 6329. Failure to send in the acceptance fax within the given period will constitute a definitive renunciation and the scholarship will be reassigned accordingly.
upon arrival in Italy scholarship recipients must hand in the original documentation, which was previously attached to the online application form (see the above list), to the Politecnico di Torino. Before handing in the aforementioned documentation, we recommend that you make photocopies for yourself. We ask that you not hand in any other documentation other than that which has been required, and put all the documentation in a single folder bearing your name, surname and "Verrès Campus project". We reemphasize that the information given in the documents must correspond to that attached to the online application form. Failure to hand in the original documentation within 10 days from the student's arrival according to the above conditions will result in the non-allocation of the scholarship.
Publication of the final list of standings is foreseen for May 2009.

We emphasize that the Politecnico di Torino assumes no responsibility for the applicant's failure to view the list of standings and/or the terms for the acceptance of the scholarships as published online and on the Official Register of the Politecnico.

In all the e-mail messages and the correspondence sent to the Politecnico following the awarding of the scholarship, the recipient must clearly specify "Verrès Campus project".

Facilities
The amount of tuition fees for the 2009/2010 academic year is about 1700 Euro. Students from low-income families can be entitled to a reduction or a waiver of tuition fees. In order to obtain such benefit, students must provide an official declaration about:

the composition of their family unit
the revenue generated abroad in 2008
the property and real estate assets generated abroad at December 31st, 2008
These declarations, issued by the competent authorities of the foreign country where the family's income is generated, must be translated into Italian and certified by the Italian Embassy or Consulate. Please see also: Information for students coming from particularly poor countries.

Scholarship recipients, together with the Bachelor of Science course, will benefit from:

additional services offered to the student community (access to the Politecnico libraries and computer laboratories, WI-FI (wireless LAN) , etc.); scholarship recipients will also be entitled to all the services offered by the regional university student assistance organisation, Ente regionale per il DIritto allo Studio Universitario (EDISU Piemonte ) at full fee: student canteen service, cultural and recreational activities, sports activities, libraries with lending service, etc. (for more information visit the Campus Facilities section)
assistance in obtaining an entry visa. For more information consult the Immigration Requirements section and the websites of the Italian Embassy or Consulate
assistance by the Stage and Job Placement Office for internship and employment.
Notes
The scholarship does not include accommodation costs, which are thus totally at the expense of the student.
The Politecnico di Torino does not guarantee any type of accommodation for Verrès Campus scholarship recipients. For students turning to the private market to rent an apartment, the initial amount requested for the cautionary deposit is equal to about three months rent, plus any fees charged by the real estate agency, if applicable. The approximate amount of the rent for an apartment shared with other students comes to about 250 EURO/month per person, and the rent for a small/medium sized apartment is about 500 EURO/month.
Enrolment at the Politecnico includes insurance coverage for accidents occurring on the university premises.

Medical insurance for emergencies (First Aid), as required by the law for non-EU citizens, is about 100 EURO per year. Upon their arrival in Italy, students must pay this amount to INA Assitalia: this is required for the conversion of the entry visa into a residence permit. For further information on these matters, see the Health insurance section.

We advise students to go to the Italian Embassy or Consulate to inform themselves on the necessary requirements to obtain an entry visa in Italy.

The scholarship does not include accommodation costs, which are thus totally at the expense of the student.
The Politecnico di Torino does not guarantee any type of accommodation for Eni Project scholarship recipients.

Medical insurance for emergencies (First Aid), as required by the law for non-EU citizens, is 98 EURO per year. Upon their arrival in Italy, students must pay this amount to INA Assitalia: this is required for the conversion of the entry visa into a residence permit. For further information on these matters, see the Health insurance section.

We advise students to go to the Italian Embassy or Consulate to inform themselves on the necessary requirements to obtain an entry visa in Italy.

http://gbi.agrsci. dk/~rsl/PhDEvent HistoryQGenetics /

PhD position in Applied Statistics in Quantitative Genetics
at the Aarhus University, DJF, Department of Genetics and Biotechnology
Research Group for Bioinformatics, Genetics and Statistics

Closing date for applications: 15 April 2009 at 12.00 noon

Project summary:
The project will develop mathematical and statistical methods for modelling incompletely observed traits (censored or truncated) and events of low frequency in large-scale quantitative genetic studies. The general idea is to explore the close mathematical connection between modern methods of event-history- analysis and nested case-control techniques to develop a range of statistical tools relevant to applications in quantitative genetics. The project is related to an existing research line on livestock quantitative genetics and breeding value prediction at the Research Group of Bioinformatics, Genetics and Statistics. See further details on the project below.

Supervision:
Rodrigo Labouriau (main supervisor), PhD (Mathematical Statistics)
Per Madsen, PhD (Quantitative Genetics)

Application procedure:
* The application should be sent in a single file in pdf format. This file should include the application form and all the documents you want to annex for the evaluation. We will only consider applications meeting all the requirements stated in the official application form
* The application form can be found by clicking here.
* The closing date for applications is 15 April 2009 at 12.00 noon (Danish time, i.e. +1 GWT)
Applications received after the closing date will not be considered!
* Please send your application to the following address: SAFE@agrsci. dk (or click here to send an e-mail applying).

Selection criteria and required qualifications:

Qualifications:
1. A relevant Master's degree (or equivalent), e.g. a master in mathematics/ statistics or a master in genetics (but in this case with a very strong mathematical and statistical background, see the selection criteria below)
2. Fluent English spoken and written.

Selection criteria:
The project requires a strong background in statistics and probability theory.
It is necessary that the candidate has already had contact with formal probability theory (e.g. axiomatic treatment of probability, stochastic processes) and theoretical statistics (e.g. classic theory of inference in parametric models, multivariate analysis and models for discrete variables as log-linear models), since it will not be possible (due to time limitations) to build-up these basic skills during the PhD program.
Computer skills and some experience with applied statistics are required.
Knowledge of general biology and specifically basic genetics will be considered an advantage, but will not be a necessary condition.

Employment conditions:
For further information on employment conditions are described in the official announcement that can be found by clicking here.

PhD position Physical Oceanography

*Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ)*

The NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is an independent
research institute associated with

the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). NIOZ was founded
in 1876 and is one of the oldest

major oceanographic institutions in Europe. Its mission is to pursue
curiosity-driven multidisciplinary marine

research in coastal and shelf seas as well as in the open ocean through
close co-operation between physicists,

chemists, geologists and biologists.

Marine research is carried out by five scientific departments: Physical
Oceanography, Marine Geology, Marine

Biogeochemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology.

*PhD position in Physical Oceanography & Seismic Acoustics *

Topic: *Observational and theoretical study of the equatorial boundary layer
*

Period: 4 years

Location: NIOZ, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research – Texel,
Netherlands

Observations show that dynamically the ocean differs distinctly in a narrow
zone of ±1o near the equator

compared to off-equatorial regions. This zone is not only dominated by
strong, vertically alternating zonal

currents that inhibit cross-equatorial transport, but also its
stratification, mixing, internal wave climate

and biological diversity differ widely. Global ocean and climate models
often give a very simplified picture

of many processes in this band, and particularly those of small-scale are
badly represented, if at all. This

is partly due to lack of spatial observational resolution. The consequence
is that the predictive value

of these models is limited. In particular, neither the choking effect of
this band of zonal currents on the

meridional transport of heat, in the Atlantic Ocean of relevance to Western
European climate, nor its

variation under climate change is known.

*Geometric focusing* of small-scale internal waves, traditionally neglected,
might have an important effect

on the dynamics of the equatorial zone, which we aim to illuminate by (1) *in
situ *measurements of

physical and acoustic fields along a cross-equatorial transect; (2) use of
satellite data; (3) comparison

to theoretical and numerical model predictions; and (4) development of these
models.

The emphasis is on understanding (1) the strong and strongly varying
equatorial current pattern; (2)

the role of small-scale but intensive internal waves; (3) the role of
geometric focusing of internal

waves on the vertical transport and distribution of heat, momentum and
particles (‘acoustic

scatterers’); and (4) the possible consequences thereof for the meridional
transport of heat and

changes therein due to global climate change. The strategy will be to search
latitudinally for coherent

patterns in underwater physical and acoustic parameters, combining them with
surface meteorological

and remote sensing data.

*We offer* a full-time PhD position for 4 years, a pension scheme, a health
insurance allowance, a yearly

8% vacation allowance, year-end bonus and flexible employment conditions.
Conditions are based on

the Collective Employment Agreement of the NWO Research Institutes.

*Further information* on the project and the position can be obtained from
Prof. Leo Maas

(+31-222-369419, maas@nioz.nl, www.nioz.nl/ maas) or Dr. Hans van Haren

*Application: *

Applicants should sent an application letter, CV, and the name, postal and
email address of two

persons familiar with the previous performance of the applicant to the
Personnel Department

attended to Mrs. Jolanda Evers, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research
(NIOZ), P.O. Box 59,

PhD Studentship in Adaptive Parallel Optimising Compilation University of Edinburgh

University of Edinburgh

PhD Studentship

Adaptive Parallel Optimising Compilation using Machine Learning

School of Informatics

Multi-core processors are the most viable means to delivering sustainable performance. However, this potential cannot be realised unless the application has been well parallelised. Unfortunately, efficient parallelisation of a sequential program is a challenging and error-prone task. It is generally agreed that manual code parallelisation by expert programmers results in the most streamlined parallel implementation, but at the same time this is the most costly and time-consuming approach. Parallelising compiler technology, on the other hand, has the potential to greatly reduce cost and time-to-market while ensuring formal correctness of the resulting parallel code. Given that the underlying processor architecture will change many times throughout the lifetime of the code, we would like parallel programs that are performance future proof too.

The project student will investigate new compiler directed approaches to delivering performance in a multi-core environment where the data input, concurrent workload and underlying architecture are evolving.

Probabilistic analysis can be used to determine program parallelism which can then be mapped to available resources. Central to this work will be the use of machine learning as a technique to learn and adapt the parallel code to this changing parallel landscape. The CaRD group at Edinburgh (http://www.icsa. informatics. ed.ac.uk/ compilers/ <http://www.icsa. informatics. ed.ac.uk/ compilers/> ) is internationally leading in the use of machine learning for compiler and architecture co-design and optimisation - this will form the backbone to this project.

The studentship, sponsored by the Centre for Numerical Algorithms and Intelligent Software (NAIS), will be available for study commencing in September 2009.

Suitable candidates will have a first degree in Computer Science and a strong interest in parallel programming and the interface between programs, compilers and computer architecture.

Informal enquiries regarding this studentship can be made to Michael O'Boyle (mob at inf.ed.ac.uk) . Further details about the project can also be found at http://www.dcs. ed.ac.uk/ home/mob/ phdplace. html.

Applications are welcome from UK, EU and overseas candidates. To apply please submit an application using the University's online application system, mentioning "NAIS Studentship" . Further details are at http://www.ed. ac.uk/studying/ postgraduate/ finder/details. php?id=492.

Application deadline: 30 April 2009. Applications after that date may be considered if the studentship has not been allocated.

PhD Studentship in Telecommunication - Swansea University

PhD Studentship

The Institute of Advanced Telecommunications within the School of Engineering at Swansea University wishes to invite applicantions for prestigious PhD Studentship to work on the EPSRC/MobileVCE Core-5 research programme entitled Green Radio.

This prestigious studentship in Radio Resource Management for Future Mobile Cellular Radio Networks is now available to overseas applicants as well as UK and EU citizens.

Introduction: Green Radio is one of three exciting and innovative research programmes sponsored by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC, www.epsrc.ac. uk <http://www.epsrc. ac.uk/> ) and the Mobile Virtual Centre of Excellence (VCE) in Mobile & Personal Communications (www.mobilevce. com <http://www.mobilevc e.com/> ) as part of its Core-5 research programme. Green Radio is an industry-led collaboration with the Universities of Edinburgh, Bristol, Kings College London and Swansea.

Given the worldwide growth in the number of mobile subscribers and the increasing contribution of information technology to the overall energy consumption of the world, there is an urgent environmental need to reduce the energy requirements of radio access networks. From an operator perspective, reduced energy consumption translates directly to lower Operating Expenditure (OPEX). These are the key drivers of the Green Radio programme. Both wide area public networks (traditionally "cellular") and local area private networks (traditionally "wireless LAN") will be considered, recognising that the structure of a Green Radio Network may differ from today's radio networks.

PhD Project Definition:

Green Radio will develop new energy efficient cellular deployment architectures based on bringing BSs closer to mobile users. Increasing BS and/or relay densities increases inter- cell interference levels. Consequently inter-cell interference is a major barrier that impedes the realisation of energy efficient mobile cellular networks. Your role will be to exploit cooperation between BSs (and relays) in an LTE-advanced RAN in order to limit inter-cell as well as intra-cell interference by the appropriate use of radio resource management (RRM) techniques.

Eligibility:

You should hold a 1st class Honours degree in Electrical/Electron ic Engineering or a closely related discipline. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a related master's degree at distinction level. The studentships would also suit mature individuals with relevant industrial experience. For UK and EU applicants, the studentship will cover the full university tuition fees and provide a minimum starting stipend of £12,940 pa. In respect of overseas applicants, each studentship will cover the full university tuition fees including the overseas contribution and provide a minimum starting stipend of £12,940 pa. Minimum stipends are fixed annually by EPSRC. The scholarship is available now and must be taken up before 1st June 2009.

For informal enquiries please contact Professor Tim O'Farrell (t.ofarrell@swansea. ac.uk)

Prospective applicants are invited to follow the University's application procedures as detailed online at http://www.swan. ac.uk/postgradua te/apply/

Please mark your application form "EPSRC/MVCE Studentship Green Radio" in the space for funding organisation and highlight the topics you wish to apply for, in order of preference, in the section additional supporting information. Applications submitted without an up to date CV and suitable referees will not be considered.

Application closing date: Friday 17 April 2009
